Mold And Military Housing in California

Many military members live in on-base housing. Unfortunately, while this housing should provide a safe place for soldiers and their families, mold has long been a persistent issue in military housing. In fact, military families began reporting problems with mold growth in their homes in the 1970s and 1980s. This often led to health issues.

While the military has made efforts to improve conditions, those efforts have been imperfect, and mold remains in many homes provided by the military. In fact, a 2020 audit by the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General revealed that there was still a strong need for mold remediation.

Unfortunately, many soldiers and their families have experienced health complications as a result of mold in military housing. If this happens to you or someone you love, Matthew de Lira, APC, can help.

Is mold in military housing toxic?

If you have military housing and have mold in your home, you’re likely concerned about whether it is toxic. The reality is that some molds are much more dangerous than others. For example:

  • Stachybotrys is better known as black mold.  This is one of the most dangerous types of mold. It can affect the immune system and release mycotoxins that cause respiratory issues.
  • Aspergillus is another common indoor mold that can release mycotoxins, which can also cause respiratory problems and other related issues.

Cladosporium and Penicillium are also common examples of molds found in military housing.

Unfortunately, even mold that is not considered “dangerous” or “toxic” can still make you sick, especially if you have a compromised immune system or are prone to respiratory illness. It can cause or worsen conditions like asthma, leaving you at a significantly elevated risk of complications.

Who can be held liable for mold in military housing?

Private companies manage much of the military housing in the country. Many of these companies are part of the Military Housing Association, and they handle the day-to-day of tenant requests and responding to complaints.

These companies can be held responsible for mold in military housing if they do not take appropriate action to remediate it. When you report the mold, it should be removed so you can have a safe place to live.

If that doesn’t happen, you should reach out to Matthew de Lira, APC today to understand what your rights are and to get help ensuring you get the compensation you deserve if those rights were violated.
